Strings for Generations

圓夢音樂計劃

Presented by Pacific Symphony and the Irvine Chinese School, Strings for Generations provides a unique opportunity for family members to play and learn about music together, under the direction of professional music educators and Symphony musicians.

Strings for Generations meets most Monday evenings from 6:30 – 8:15 p.m. at the Irvine Chinese School. Session 1 runs from November 20, 2017 – March 4, 2018 and Session 2 runs from March 5 – May 21, 2018. See attached schedule for rehearsal and performance dates.

Goals

  • To provide high-quality string music instruction in a non-competitive, non-threatening environment and to provide opportunities for students to learn about music from Western and Chinese cultures.
  • To foster positive interactions between multiple generations through music, strengthening familial relationships.
  • To enrich students’ instrumental music education, while providing opportunities for adults to develop or rekindle an interest in music.

Participants and Requirements:

Strings for Generations is geared toward students in grades 4 – 9 who have completed at least one year of string music instruction at their school, and at least one adult family member. Younger students who have completed at least one year of music instruction may also register.

Adult family members must either have experience with a string instrument, or be willing to learn a rhythm or melodic instrument. Adult family members may also apply for limited spaces to participate as a program volunteer. No prior music education is required for adult participants.

Participant criteria includes:

  • Grade 4 ~ 8
  • Youth must play a string instrument (violin, viola, cello or bass) in their school’s music program.
  • Youth must have an adult family member who can also participate in playing an instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass or rhythm/percussion).
  • Participants must be able to read music (except for adults who are interested in playing rhythm/percussion instruments).
  • Participants must have access to or be willing to rent an instrument. Pacific Symphony will provide rhythm and percussion instruments.
  • Participants must commit to attending all sessions, except in the cases of emergency or pre-arranged absences.

Fees

Strings for Generations is made possible in part thanks to funding from the James Irvine Foundation. However, Pacific Symphony and Irvine Chinese School also rely upon program fees to help cover the costs of program materials, percussion instruments, music, facilities and high-quality music instruction from professional music educators and musicians. Participants also receive discounted tickets to Pacific Symphony concerts throughout the course of the program.

An additional materials fee for parents enrolled in the percussion class covers the cost of drum sticks, a practice pad, a recorder, and instruction books. See the below fee calculator to calculate the fees for your family.

Pacific Symphony provides financial aid and payment plans for those who are unable to pay the full participant fee. Complete the financial aid section at the end of the registration form to be considered for financial aid.

* After you register and complete your financial aid information (if applicable), we will notify you via email of your acceptance into the program. Participant fees must be paid by November 13 unless other arrangements are made.
