Irvine Chinese School Elective Classes

All students attending Sunday’s Traditional Zhuyin Chinese or Simplified Hanyu Chinese sessions in third grade or above must enroll in an elective class each school year.

Students have an option to take an additional Elective class or an Extra Elective class at noon with additional fee. Below is a list of elective classes that we offered in the areas of language enrichment, culture, arts and crafts, and sports. These classes are offered during different time: Sunday morning and/or Sunday afternoon. The Extra Elective classes are only offered at noon on Sunday. Please note that class schedules are subject to change at any time.

Leadership Course

To become a leader one requires good organization, communication, and team building skills.
These skills not only improve oneself, they also help with one’s study and work. The course prepares children how to organize, learn and improve how to communicate better, and how to serve and show team building spirit, which is helpful in children’s future development.
*** This course is limited to students enrolling in high school level, 9th grade and up ***

SATII Chinese Preparation

This course prepares students for the College Board’s Chinese SAT II exam. It teaches listening comprehension as well as usage and reading comprehension. The teaching and materials provided will improve students’ exam taking skills for SAT II Chinese exam.
** This course is limited to students enrolling in U.S. high schools, 9th grade and up ***

AP Chinese Preparation

High school students who have passed SAT-II test and/or completed ICS Chinese II level class. AP Chinese test registration priority is given to students who are currently enrolled at Irvine Chinese School high school division and will further be determined by student’s grade level.

Cultural, Arts and Crafts

Chinese Culture Class

This class will help students gain better understanding and appreciation of Chinese history and culture. Topics include history, virtue, names and titles, holidays, technology and inventions, architecture, languages, proverbs and idioms, etc. Students may represent school in annual Chinese culture knowledge Contest.

Chinese Brush Painting

This class teaches the traditional Chinese brush painting, arrangement, and shading techniques. Students learn to appreciate the design, display and the perspective intended by the artists. By controlling the concentration of ink, the thickness and absorbency of the paper, and the flexibility of the brush, students learn to produce an infinite variety of styles and forms.

Chinese Chess

This class teaches basic Go game and Chinese chess strategies such as opening moves and combat tactics as well as analytical thinking.

Chinese Beading

This class allows students to learn beading techniques and create beautiful pieces of art, limited only by imagination. (extra material fee will be collected)

Chinese Arts and Crafts

This class introduces traditional Chinese arts and crafts, for example art of folding and cutting papers – a good training for students’ creativity and developing appreciation to Chinese cultures.

Chinese Instruments

This class offers playing flute techniques to students and is taught by a folk music specialist. Students may participate in the New Year Celebration Performance.

This Chinese folk toy, diabolo which developed since ancient times, has added memorable childhood fun.

Folk Dance

This class teaches Chinese folk dance. Students will participate in various community events and the New Year Celebration Performance.

Introduction to Cartoon

This class introduces the basic concepts and techniques of cartooning. In this class, students learn to create their own cartoons. Difficulty will vary according to the class level.

Sports

Chinese Kung-Fu

This class teaches Shaolin and Mantis form of martial art. Students may participate in various community events and the New Year Celebration Performance.

This class teaches students basketball skills and team spirit. (Limited to 35 students each class).

Frequently Asked Questions

My kid is not required by the school to take the Elective class since they did not meet the criteria. Can they still come on Sunday to attend the Elective class?

Yes, he or she could attend the Sunday Elective class with additional fee. Current ICS student is eligible for taking an additional Elective class for $250/year.

My kid is taking Elective class requited by school. Can he take an addtional Elective class?

Yes, he or she could take an additional Elective class with an additional fee for $250/year. But he or she is still required to take the 2 hours Chinese class. The additional Elective class could be on a different period on Sunday.
